Finalist, National Merit Scholarship

Congratulations to Joyanna Gilmour for her recent National Merit Scholarship finalist status.  The Gilmour family has an outstanding, 10-year record with Covenant Home.

Joyanna’s brother, Timothy did grades 9-12 with CHC; he then graduated from Cedarville College in OH and now studies in a graduate program [electrical engineering] at Penn State on a full scholarship from Cedarville.  Bethany also studied with Covenant Home for grades 9-12 and now is a sophomore at Cedarville.  Joyanna is completing her fourth year with Covenant Home as well and has been accepted at Liberty University where she plans to major in Biology.

We salute the Gilmour family for their consistent and diligent work.  They are an interesting and vigorous family, typical of those who elect to use a challenging and comprehensive course of study.

Our Newest Covenant Laureate:  Lauren Walker

by Mrs. Ruth Green (CHC Grade Auditor)

I would like to nominate Lauren Walker for a Laureate Award, based on a paper she wrote on Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
This was a model paper of literary analysis. Lauren demonstrated skillful use of adjectives to establish characterization, included an effective plot summary without getting bogged down in details retelling the plot, and

focused her paper on a discussion of two central themes of the novel. Her evaluation of these themes included an insightful assessment of how the author's message alternately supported and diverged from a Christian worldview. Lauren was exceptional among CHC students in using direct quotations from the novel to illustrate her observations and support her thesis. Finally, the paper was free of mechanical errors. All in all, this writing assignment was executed masterfully and is deserving of special recognition.

(Lauren was nominated by her grade auditor, Ruth Green, and on February 8, 2005, received her award from the Covenant Home Staff.)
